The Power of a Note and a Coloring Book
328 words | 2.5 Minutes
Last week, I only sent three notes. My goal was to send more. Why? Because sending a note is one of the most significant things we can do — in business or in life.
I’ll never forget watching Ed Reed’s NFL Hall of Fame speech years ago. At one point, he looked over at Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner and said, “I still have the book you sent me when my brother died.” It was emotional. My eyes watered then, and I still get chills thinking about it today. Did you know Frank Blake, the former CEO for Home Depot was known to have sent over 25,000 notes to his associates over a seven year period. Employees treasured them – especially when he retired!
Personal notes are powerful. They’re impactful. They lift people in a way nothing else can. Few acts are more meaningful than sending someone a note — or a book — that says, “I’m thinking of you… I want to encourage you… I care about you.” These small gestures often become life’s greatest treasures.
Over the years, I’ve been blessed to receive notes from:
A former President of the United States
Teachers and coaches
Family members
Business leaders and volunteers I’ve served alongside
People who have read my books or listened to my podcast
Book reviews on Amazon? Those are powerful notes, too.
I’ve also received books in the mail, each accompanied by a personal message. They all hold a special place in my library. Just last week, I received a note from a former podcast guest who shared how much being on the show meant to her. It lifted her spirit — and it lifted mine, too.
Years ago, I mailed a coloring book to a young boy after meeting him during a relocation survey – his parents called me and told me it was the greatest moving experience they have ever had. It was more than moving their stuff – it was moving their hearts
Here’s the beautiful truth: the more we lift others, the more we are lifted.
So, who can you lift this week? Send them a note. Give them a book. Leave a post-it on their desk. Big or small, your act of kindness could change someone’s life — and maybe even your own.
